A Word From Pastor Steve Schilke
Pastor Stephen E. Schilke was born and raised in Rochester, MI. He was baptized as an infant and attended St. John Lutheran School for all eight years, being also confirmed there in 1960. He graduated from Rochester High School in 1964 and from Central Michigan University in 1969 with a BS degree in mathematics. In 1976 he received a MS degree in Athletic Administration from CMU. Steve taught mathematics and coached football and basketball in the Tri-City area of Michigan for many years, most of the time in Birch Run. He had the opportunity to have both of his children as students in math class and as athletes on sports teams.
In 1995, feeling the nudging of the Lord, he left the teaching profession to prepare for the pastoral ministry at Concordia Theological Seminary in Ft. Wayne, IN. Pastor Steve was placed by Synod’s Board of Assignments at Christ Our Shepherd, Newport, MI in June, 1997. In 2000 he accepted a call to Holy Cross, Onaway, MI. He retired from full-time pastoral ministry in November 2008 and moved to the Bay City area.
Pastor Schilke began his Intentional Interim Pastor training in 2007. He has completed a six month program by the National Association of Lutheran Interim Pastors (NALIP) called “Basic Education for Intentional Interim Ministry”. He has had five previous Intentional Interim positions at Redeemer, Saginaw; St. John, Rochester; Trinity, Port Huron; Faith, Port Huron; and Grace, Auburn.
While attending CMU, Pastor Steve met and married Sharon Krupa and they have two adult children. Mark, his wife Raechel and their two sons, Jacob and Joseph, live in Flushing, MI. Dawn and her four children, Jared, Allison, Tyler and Elizabeth, live in Freeland, MI.
